Creating A Night-Time Haven

Updated: Jun 2, 2023

A well-designed lighting scheme can transform your garden into a magical and inviting space, extending its usability well into the evening hours. By strategically incorporating different lighting techniques and fixtures, you can enhance the beauty of your plants, highlight key features, and create an enchanting atmosphere.

One of my favourite simple pleasures is sitting under my wisteria-laden pergola as the summer nights draw in, glass of Prosecco in hand and enjoying the candles and fairy lights. It's my peaceful haven, perfect filled with laughter and friends.

Set the Mood with Ambient Lighting

Ambient lighting serves as the foundation for your garden lighting design. It provides a soft, overall illumination that sets the mood. Consider using outdoor wall lights, post lights, or string lights to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Strategically placing these fixtures around seating areas, pathways and entrances will not only enhance visibility but also add a touch of charm.

Accentuate Garden Features

Highlighting specific elements in your garden can add depth and visual interest. Use spotlights or wall lights to illuminate architectural features, statues or unique plants. These focused beams of light create a dramatic effect, drawing attention to the focal points. Experiment with different angles and intensities to create the desired effect and play with shadows and silhouettes.

Pathway and Step Lighting

Safety is paramount when it comes to outdoor lighting, especially along pathways and steps. Utilise low-level lighting options, such as recessed or solar-powered, to guide guests through the garden. Placing lights along the edges of pathways or using bollard lights ensures visibility while adding a subtle and elegant touch to your garden's ambiance.

Create an Enchanting Atmosphere with String Lights

String lights are a versatile and enchanting addition to any garden. Hang them from trees, pergolas, or trellises to create a whimsical and inviting atmosphere. Choose warm-white or soft-colored bulbs to infuse your outdoor space with a cozy and magical glow. String lights can be used year-round and are particularly charming during outdoor gatherings or special occasions.

Consider Security Lighting

In addition to enhancing aesthetics, outdoor lighting can also serve as a deterrent to unwanted visitors. Motion-sensor lights strategically placed provide an added layer of security. These instantly illuminate when motion is detected, alerting you to any potential intruders and ensuring peace of mind. Opt for fixtures with adjustable sensitivity and timers to customize the level of security and convenience.

Shopping list:

My solar string lights are from B&M, and great value at £20 for 50 warm white. Available in store, for more details click here. I bought three sets, at 7m each. You can find similar ones at Wilko too.

The paper solar lanterns were from Talking Tables on Amazon, and available in teal and pink (yes, I bought both colours!). Lights4Fun also have a great range of solar lanterns.
