How To Mix Vintage & Modern

Mixing modern and vintage furniture and accessories in your home is my favourite way to create a unique and stylish space. It adds character and interest to your décor, and allows you to showcase your personality and creativity.

However, achieving the perfect balance between modern and vintage pieces can be challenging. In this blog post, I explore tips and tricks to help you mix modern and vintage furniture and accessories in your home.

  1. Don't be afraid of colour: One of the great things about vintage collecting is it brings colour into your home. So while I might start with an idea of the palette I'm going to use for a room - for example the dark green in my kitchen - I rigidly don't stick to this. So you'll see pops of red and blue sitting pretty amongst the greens and browns.

  2. Mix and match styles: It may sound strange to mix and match different styles of furniture and accessories, but for me this creates a cohesive and balanced look. As an example, pair a mid-century modern sofa with a 1970s coffee table; or a modern accent chair with a vintage rug. The key here is to find pieces that complement each other in terms of colour, texture and shape.

  3. Use contrasting textures: This adds visual interest to your space; a sleek, modern side table worls with an old velvet armchair while a 50s console table is finished off with a new metal lamp. This creates a dynamic and eclectic look that's both stylish and functional.

  4. Pay attention to scale and proportion: You don't want one piece to dominate the space or feel out of place. If you have a large, modern sectional sofa, you could balance it out with a vintage area rug or a vintage armchair. This creates a sense of balance and harmony in your space.

  5. Add personal touches: Here's the best but and what really makes a room unique. Whether it's a family heirloom or a modern piece of art, incorporating items that have personal meaning to you can make your space feel personal.

In conclusion, mixing modern and vintage in your home create a unique and stylish space. By following these tips, you can achieve a look that really showcases your personality and creativity.
